About marker tags

About tags

Tags are a new feature we’ve introduced to allow you to add additional details to artworks. We know a lot of you, like me, love collecting data (after all, we’re hunters), so this feature gives you the opportunity to add that in right with the artwork.

These are especially useful for pointing out things like the art festival during which a mural was created, or an organization that commissioned the work.

It looks like this in the editor (click Advanced details!):

Some tips on using tags

Using tags:

  • Hover over the little info icon to figure out the definition of the tag.
  • Not all tags are relevant or necessary. Use them when it adds relevant context.
  • There are multiple types of tags: text attributes, numbers, links and multiple selection. Some multiple selection tags will allow you to create new values, others only allow a pre-defined list of values.
  • Don’t forget to press save on the artwork after changing your tags!

Creating new tag values:

  • Try to use tag values that already exist if there’s anything close to what you need. This will be helpful in grouping all related artworks together.
  • When adding new tag values, try to keep them short - no periods, a few spaces as possible.

Thanks Thomas, this looks great

The setup of these was inspired by the way tags work on OpenStreetMap, a platform we really love because of its amazing community and the great showcase it is for the power of collaboration.

We have loads of plans for how to use these in the future, but the main thing right now is getting feedback from you: what tags should we add?

Great idea, congratulations! This community is growing, and artists are eager to appear on the map!

Thomas,

After giving it a first try I miss : liters paint, some still paint with paint instead of cans.
Maybe a tag like ‘project’
There’s a tag ‘commisioned by’ , maybe add ‘supported by’…

So I’ve been fiddling around with the marker tags. Annd there’s a lot to choose from.
And that means even more input. Because I understand the importance of this new info I decided to add the following tags at least:

  • artist nationality
  • artwork type
  • date created and when removed
  • festival
  • powered by.

Which ones do you use?

Top!!!
Most artists are on Instagram, what about an “artist IG link” or “artist official website link” ?

When uploading walls, usually I try to add to artist nationality, powered by/commissioned, festival and the date created.
“Artwork type” and “Surface” are interesting too, definitely!

What are the opinions of the other hunters about this new cool tool?

There’s an interesting question around using tags for things that aren’t related directly to the artwork itself.

For example, anything related to the artist should maybe be recorded on the artist profile instead, so it doesn’t need to be repeated for every uploaded artwork of that same artwork.

Of course that would require being able to add information to unclaimed artist profiles as a hunter, which currently isn’t yet something that is possible.

Makes sense Thomas.
In fact it’s a bit double work now, time consuming.
When uploading a work from a claimed artist, would be nice that the artist (nationality, socials etc) info appears automatically.
If this appears automatically, it could be a nice plus and might convince other artists to complete their profile. On every artwork page, a link to their socials… they would love it too?

We have Powered by / Commissioned by. Maybe I miss “Curated by”. Often it’s a thin line between these 3 subjects/tags.
For example: The Crystal Ship is curated by All About Things / Powered by Stad Oostende
Under Festival we just write The Crystal Ship

Does that mean that maybe we should go for a more generic tag name instead of ‘Powered by’/‘Commissioned by’/‘Curated by’?

Maybe a single ‘Organisations’ tag that can have multiple values might be better, or do you like the granularity?

Sounds a like a good idea. “Organizations” or " Artwork was made possible by" ?

What do the others think about it?
