Link pages of artists with multiple names

Sometimes an artist works under different names/aliasses or changes their artist name during their carreer. Admins now already have the possibility to give artists an “alternative name“, so when you search for one name, both show up.

Would it be a good idea to make it possible for admins to link artist profiles together, much like is possible with artworks now? It would be neat if you open an artist page and not only see the artworks they created under that name, but also the ones they created under a different name in the same page (grouped per artist name). Maybe there could also be an extra distinction for artists that work solo as well as in a duo or group?

My vision for the artist page:

  • if you open artist page for [Artist A], you would first see all the artworks under that name;
  • Beneath that a line “This artist also works under the name [Artist B]” followed by the artworks under that name;
  • Beneath that a line “This artist is also part the group [Artist group name]“ followed by all the artworks they made as part of the group

Example of an artist that changed their name: “Naamlooozz” now works under their given name “Kenneth Letsoin“

Example of a duo/group that also has members with solo works: Herakut > Hera and Akut

In that first case you mention, I’d be more inclined to merge those two artist profiles together, since it’s a name change.

That second one is interesting though - we had some conversation about crew names before- but maybe if that’s too controversial, we could instead add a Related Artists tag with the new tags for artists.

I would argue that merging together might not be the way to go. There are artworks out there signed with the old name and then with the new name. Merging them together will probably result in the old name being added again when hunters start uploading the older works that were not on the platform yet.

I think there’s a difference between crews and artist groups. Solo artists can belong to a crew and not necessarily paint together. A group creates art together and signs it as the group (most of the time duos).

I love the idea of putting artist related info in tags on the artist page instead of the marker page. It means no more redundant work and no more variations in the usage of the tag on a marker level. I think Crew name(s) would be good to add there too. An artist group should have their own artist page, so that’s more complicated I think.
