The “Fill the gaps” for “No creation date” says “If you can find out the year or date, add it to the artwork.” For lots of pieces it’s easy to get the year (sometimes it’s even included with the signature), but as far as I can tell there’s no way to actually enter only that: both the full edit and the quick action require a full date.
Ah, gotcha. If year-only isn’t useful, though, it might be worth tweaking the text to something like “If you can find out the date…” The current wording makes it seem like there’s a way to add partial dates lurking somewhere
I would suggest using the last day of the year, rather than the first. You know it was there at the end, but you won’t know if it was there at the start.
This way, it doesn’t mess up timelines either, should someone add an older wall and use the “Previously On this Wall” tag.
My manager and I decided to enter the 1st of July if only the year is known, following the reasoning that the artwork was painted more likely in the summer rather than in the winter (Western Europe at least).
I would suggest that the website accepts also the formats MM-YYYY and YYYY for the (creation, removal) dates or that we as hunters get instructions how to fill-in these “truncated” dates.
As TinyTim states, anything is better than an empty date !
