I rely quite heavily on mostly Instagram for my daily street art info at the moment. But after already letting go of Twitter/X some time ago, recent events have also got me thinking about my presence on the Meta platforms.
So, I’m looking for alternatives. If not to get rid of Meta right away, maybe to start building a presence/audience/base on some other platform(s). What platforms do you guys use? Anyone active on an alternative already? Any tips for me? Anyone care to join me in my journey to new worlds?
Edwin,
I have had similar thoughts but think I will be tied to Meta for a little while as all of the different groups I’m in (like camera clubs, digital artists group) operate using these platforms. Also, while the street art hunter and street artists are largely on Instagram I feel stuck there too.
I have joined Bluesky (bsky.app) too but am not very active there at the moment.
It’s annoying all the other platforms are so fragmented. I use both Bluesky and Mastodon, but it’s not ideal that certain people I’d like to follow are on one, and others on the other.
Feels like the early days of messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram, where everyone had a different personal favourite. Hopefully it will settle into something more cohesive over time.
We’re also still quite interested in seeing if we can add more social features to SAC, although not sure if that will ever be or should even aim to be a replacement for the other apps.
Yes, I agree with both of you that it’s difficult to move away at the moment. I sense that a large part of the artistic community are ready to move away, but have nowhere to go.
It’s kind of a chicken and the egg situation I think. Everybody is holding each other hostage on Meta because that is where everybody else is too. I feel we can make a start by becoming active on one selected alternative and actively letting likeminded people know where to find us.
If one sheep leeps over the ditch, maybe more will follow?
Some time ago there was a similar movement, where I received some messages to register for Cara. That doesn’t appear to have been very successful, not a lot of activity there (I must admit I am not active there too). For now I will also check out Bluesky and Mastodon.
