Request for input: wrong location/can't find community note

I’ve noticed one thing that doesn’t currently exist as a community note is something that indicates that the artwork is tagged in the wrong location, or can’t be found.

Is that something you think we should add? And if so, do you have a suggestion for a catchy short name that we should display this as?

“Location Issue”? Could that work?

I think it would be helpful to have and will make it easier for hunters to clear up community notes.

Suggestions for a catchy name …. Missing , Misplaced, Unfindable

suggests artwork is not where it says it is, but is not confirmed as removed.

I think getting more community feedback buttons is great in general but we may need to remind users what each button is used for (perhaps with tool tips if possible), for example I see a number of people mark an artwork as removed when they really mean they didn’t find it.

A tool tip here could say “only mark as removed if you have verified the location is correct and the piece no longer exists at the location”

This new missing / location query button could help reduce this as people have the option to say they couldn’t find it, so maybe this will already cure the incorrect reports of removed works.

Yes, I think that would be a good idea, currently people just tend to use the Comment button, but it’s an issue that probably deserves it’s own button.
Agree with Stef “Location Issue” or “Location Incorrect” would work.

Agree with comments from Chalkster about tooltips to help distinguish between using “Removed” and the new button.

I was actually convinced we already had this button

I agree with @Chalkster a catchy name, with a message behind to explain how to use it.

What about ‘NOT HERE’?

Another thing I was thinking about, when you can’t find an artwork at the proposed location, is it because it has been removed, or because the location is off?

So why not use this one button ‘NOT HERE’, the action is the same for both, the hunter should check it and either ‘remove’ or adjust the location.

So my proposal is, replace the ‘removed’ button with ‘not here’.

Thoughts anyone?

Indeed Tim, removed is not “always” removed. Important nuance.

I think there is a case for different buttons as long as there are instructions on the relevant screens that appear when the buttons are pressed.

If properly explained, and used correctly, I think “Removed” and “Not here?” (or whatever the new button is called) are very different. “Removed” should mean that the mural, or artwork, is gone (ie painted over, building demolished etc), and the Community Note screen should provide enough instructions that a complete explanation of “what has happened to the artwork” is given. It should be used when the community member is confident they found the location of the artwork, but it is no longer there, or no longer visible.

The “Not Here?” is just “I could not find it?” - which will likely require more investigation from the resident hunter, CM or QC team member handling the note. It could be a community member who is not particularly good at looking, it could be they didn’t read an instruction in the artwork that tells them they need to look up (I remember one of these), or it could be that the location is wrong.

In both cases (the “Removed” and new button) if there was a capability for the community member to add a photo, and they did so, this would also make the job of the person handling the community note much easier.

Adding pictures is something I’m working on, and will be released either before the holidays or early next year. Agree that’s going to make it a lot easier!

I also agree that these two buttons would not quite be the same:

  • As a visitor (and a not particularly attentive one in all situations, I’ll admit!) there have been situations where I felt like I probably just missed it because the instructions weren’t clear enough or the location wasn’t specific enough. I recently had one where a mural was somewhere in a large parking structure, and I couldn’t find it, but I felt like that was me not looking right, rather than the mural not existing anymore.
  • In other situations, I’ve been very sure the artwork was there before and isn’t anymore.

I do think the ‘Can’t find‘ / ‘Not here‘ button should probably be shown first, as that is probably the better button to press in most cases for casual app users, rather than the ‘Removed‘ option.
