New: Exploration Progress, Streaks & More Badges are live

Hi everyone :waving_hand:

After a few months of building, three new gamification features are now live in the app:

:compass: Exploration Progress

Track how many artworks you’ve discovered per city and per country. Open the Explore tab and tap the new Exploration button (compass icon).

When you haven’t started yet, you’ll see:

:fire: Streaks

Mark an artwork as seen at least once a day to build a streak. Find it on your profile under the Achievements tab. Hit milestones at 7, 30, 90 and 365 days to unlock streak badges, proof you’re not just visiting, you’re consistently exploring.

:sports_medal: Badges

Earn badges that show you’re a real Street Art fan. Each one unlocks the moment you hit its goal:

:camping: First Discovery: mark your first artwork as seen

:100: Explorer 100: discover 100 artworks

:globe_showing_europe_africa: Globetrotter 10: explore 10 different cities

:cityscape: City Complete: see every artwork in a city

:united_nations: Country Pioneer / Settler / Conqueror: reach 25%, 50% or 75% of a country

:high_voltage: Streak 7 / 30 / 90 / 365: build a daily streak

All earned badges are visible on your profile.

Why I built this

this is the foundation of my graduation project. The three features above are the first layer, designed to make exploration feel more rewarding.

But the research goes further. I’ve explored ideas around collaborative discoveries, narrative routes, quest-style exploration and more, concepts that didn’t make this release but could shape what comes next. Your feedback decides which directions are worth building

There’s a short feedback form linked inside the Exploration view, or directly here: Street Art Cities Gamification Feature Feedback Survey

It takes about 5 minutes and your responses help me validate the design as part of my thesis. Open to all impressions: positive, negative, suggestions, bugs.

Thanks :folded_hands:

Amazing work. Let the games begin.

To be clear: everyone starts from 0?

Great work.
As you might know, I am not a big fan of rankings:), but the progress / percentage is really interesting. Is it possible to integrate the historical seen’s?

Just to understand: as how it is now, we should delete our previous seen and push again the seen button?

Tested it, after some new uploads in Athens. Looks pretty cool!

As I see, it’s calculated on published / hidden artworks right?
So, only when the historical seen’s are integrated, the % will be correct, especially for long time hunters.
Does it makes sense the show like 78% hidden artworks / 65% published artworks / 98% all artworks? (numbers given just as an example)
Would be even more cooler?
Can imagine that it could be a tough cookie technically to divide the percentage?

Thanks :folded_hands: and totally with you on the historical seens question.

Right now the system only counts seens from the moment the feature went live, which is unfair to anyone who’s been hunting for years. To answer your concrete question: re-tapping “seen” on an artwork you already marked doesn’t work, once you’ve marked it, the button says “You’ve already reported this”.

The plan is to either run a one-time backfill from your existing history, or add an “Import my history” button you can press once. Discussing with Thomas this Friday which direction makes most sense. Either way: you shouldn’t have to lift a finger to get your real progress back

Just a little note: when hitting ••• we could delete our own note. And re-tap the seen.

Nice challenges!
We discussed earlier e retro seen (when a hunter could enter the date of the seen).

Hi Guys,

thank you for your immense work and for adding also such kind of features.

I wanted to test it, and I clicked on “Exploration” Button (is it correct?). But I get this (on 2 different cities: Helsinki and Cologne)

What did I wrong? :expressionless_face:

Very nice feature!

How can we in the exploration score have the historical data considered? (Ie “seen” before the launch of the feature).

promising feature,

some remarks:

i have only 10 ‘seen’ in paris, it doesn’t take in account the ones i did previously,

it shows 10/5230 in Paris : where 5230 is the total art piece in the city, but only 3590 are visible right now - making impossible to reach 100%

side note for exploration: (feature request) it’d be nice to have a ‘hide what i’ve seen’ toggle when navigating on the map, so only new ones/unseen are visible. (it helps to notice new ones in places where there’s high concentration of art pieces)

Does that help?

whaaat i never noticed that 3 dots menu and kept complaining about this feature missing when using the app - i regret i did not posted this feature request earlier :stuck_out_tongue:

i also tried the ‘…’ next to the ‘seen comment’ on an art detail page, to undo in case i clicked on ‘seen’ by mistake (i was also looking for that)

thanks a lot, i now have the right toolset, i hope the shoes won’t fail before i reach the first 2k artpieces seen

Glad that I helped you out!
Its for me the most usefull feature while hunting.

@thomas (and others;)
It’s not the first time app users haven’t really noticed the ••• menu, even though we’ve highlighted it several times in newsletters.

Any thoughts on changing the •••? Maybe simply replacing it with “Filters” (assuming it wouldn’t take up too much screen space).

As a long-time SAC hunter, I’ve had the chance to work behind the scenes, so I tend to notice these things and features pretty quickly. I can imagine it might be less obvious for others though. Just thinking out loud…

Thank you for the “…” Menu and the filter. That works fine.

Can you please still look at the problem I encounter, when clicking on the exploration button (i posted it above). I still get this kind of view/error.

Having separate percentages for % of TOTAL / % of ACTIVE would be brilliant!

Shouldn’t be too difficult to implement as (I’m assuming) artworks are linked to a city, and also have a flag in the database to say whether they are still active/visible or not, so it’s just a case of getting a count of how many artworks a user has seen in a city and then splitting that into still visible/removed numbers. The count of all artworks in that city will then also have two components of visible/removed counts to be able to calculate the relevant %'s.

I’m a little confused about why this should require a one-hit import of data though to get previously logged viewings to count in the numbers. Does it maintain a count/percentage figure in the database then rather than querying the data to get it as and when required? If it does then adding previously seen artworks (using the new “seen with past date” functionality) won’t change the percentage values… will it?

Hey Noa, should the artworks you hunted not also be included in the percentage of artworks you discovered? I think now it only counts the ones you have “seen”, but imo you can’t hunt it without seeing it first

Bumping this one again to voice my support for the count also including artworks you added, otherwise the figures are essentially meaningless for prolific hunters. (And also for ignoring Removed artworks in the calculation, as they’re impossible to mark as spotted, even at a historic date.)

It would be good if the streak calculation also included hunting, not just spotting: I keep losing my streak even though I’m uploading new artworks every day.

(BTW the app says I’ve viewed 30% of the artworks in Tallinn, which if I’m reading the announcement correctly should have triggered a Country Pioneer badge, but that doesn’t seem to have happened.)
