Logging artworks seen in the past

Good evening. I can’t find a way of doing this or anything about it in the forum… but is there a way to add a date to the “seen” tagging as I want to log artwork I saw before I knew about this amazing app! :slightly_smiling_face:

I can find the relevant artworks (although some don’t appear in the app so I guess they haven’t been hunted there, but that’s a different issue!) and click the “seen” button but then it may be confusing if I’m marking an item as being seen if the most recent logs are for it being removed or not found.

I have sightings in Milan, Bratislava, Barcelona, Berlin, Madeira, Paris and Krakow over the last few years and would love to log my sightings in case I go back and want to filter out what I’ve already seen.

Thanks, and keep up the great work. :+1:

Hey,

The Seen button doesn’t work like a personal checklist or travel log. When you tap it, the app automatically records the date and your physical proximity to the artwork. It’s essentially a quality check to confirm the piece is still on the street.

Because of that:

  • A Seen log only counts if you’re within a small radius of the artwork
  • It’s used by partner cities to measure real‑world impact and verify what’s still active
  • Backdating old sightings wouldn’t have value, since it can’t confirm the artwork’s current status

So even if you’ve seen pieces in Milan, Bratislava, Barcelona, Berlin, Madeira, Paris or Krakow over the years, the system isn’t designed to store historical travel logs, it’s designed to keep the map accurate today.

What about a retrospective Seen?
I wouldn’t mind to push the seen and enter the correct date (read: like have 2 possibilities: seen now, seen in the past).
Advantage: In case going back the city someday( as I do often), the filters works correct (user app experience).

I get it, but who will do the extra work of looking into which date you’ve seen a certain artwork before?

I’m assuming the user would. I’d certainly be finding the relevant photo I will have taken and getting the date from that.

If the date is added with the clicking of the button then it won’t disturb anything as the page in the app presumably sorts the “seen” entries by date and just shows the most recent 5 or so so it won’t show up other than highlighting the “seen” button as the page will recognise that you as a user have logged it as being seen.

In terms of the UI it could be a split button (not ideal, tbh) that has the smaller part accessing the datepicker (while the larger part is just for the “seen now” option) or just open a datepicker with today’s date selected by default?

I think there is no extra work at all (just the development).

This increases the app user experience (seen / unseen filter ) and gives the data more correctly for all users. The being seen will be shown on the correct date of seen.

The extra work is the willingness of the user /hunter.

I smell on the ongoing talks of how we use the seen, that maybe we are not gonna allowed anymore to push future wise the seen when we saw artworks in the past. In the case, the questions raises: why do we have the seen / unseen filter than? Probably one of the app features which have the biggest impact of the hunter experience.

Its double: its a qaulity check (retrospective seen with correct date) which solves the issue actually, and the filter works correctly for all.
Only advantages and correct data
Its a feature for the future, and only the app user knows when he took the photo of course… .

I think the feature could both work as a personal checklist and as a signal to the community about the state of the artwork.

It just means that only certain ‘seens’ would be considered quality signals (those done when in close proximity to the artwork), others are just for your personal log.

It means we have to build a few different things though:

  1. Actually save the user’s distance from the artwork when tapping seen - we don’t do this yet.
  2. Allowing you to change the date of the seen after tapping the button (and maybe also allowing you to add a comment, this has been requested in the past as well).
  3. A place to view all your personal seens - your own logbook.

I really like that idea, would love to put it on the development roadmap for this summer if people are interested in it!

Yes! Thanks for considering the idea Thomas!

Yes, a collection (the collections as it is now… makes not really sense for me) with the seens would be great!
Collection with filters: artists / seens / cities / maybe few keywords like festivals.

I’m so pleased you are thinking of implementing this!

With reference to your points, and trying to minimise the development work required :

1. Are we actually concerned about the user’s distance from the artwork at all when they log it as seen, and using it as quality control? I’d like to think that this community is self regulating and all have a similar love for the ‘cause’ so wouldn’t intentionally mess up stuff by logging stuff as “seen” if they haven’t actually seen it.

Also, I know I go out and am busy taking photos of the artworks I visit, and do sometimes forget to mark stuff as “seen” whilst I am there so just mark it when I get home. If you intend to use the user’s distance from the work when they mark it as seen as being the quality control mechanism then would this stop the “Seen at XX:XX by User” from being shown to others if they mark it when they are not close to it?

NOTE : As a slight aside (but related) - when adding new artworks you have to mark them as seen after upload, so you wouldn’t be close to the location then either. One way to get around this would be to automatically mark it as seen for the uploader though.

2. Tapping the “seen” button to just mark it quickly is very useful. Would there be any benefit in an extra button called “Log Artwork” or “Previously Seen” to offer the date picking and comment functionality there?

3. I like the logbook idea, but this is already sort of doable via the “filter by seen” functionality on the map. The only grip I have with the filtering is the “Collected by Me” filtering which shows ALL artworks in ALL collections. I use the “Collections” to gather artworks I want to see, like a sort of route… if I could filter by a specific Collection (chosen when I click the filter “Collected by Me” then that would be amazing! (perhaps I’ll put that in as a new feature request elsewhere.)

Thanks for your consideration.

I’ve just been looking at the Exploration feature and I love it! However, if I want to increase my % of artworks seen in a city I need to be able to log those previously seen… and without the date picker option it runs the risk of people making stuff as seen now that may have been removed since they saw it.

Just another reason for adding this, if at all possible!
