How to recognise community murals

There are a fair few murals out there that have been painted by a known artist along with the local community. This could be schools, local groups, etc. We have a naming convention for unknown artists; if there isn’t one for community assistance, can we formalise one? If so, I suggest this:

Community - [City]

This would follow the same naming convention for unknown artists of Unknown - [City]

I believe this is common enough to warrant this. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 5 public murals in the West Midlands region that could benefit from having this.

If this is a really common thing, then I guess we could break it down even further, by having other categories: School - [City], Local Artists [City], etc. But for now, just having Community- [City] will suffice.

I know we can just add the contribution to the description, and yes, we absolutely must. But I believe it is also important to give the Community credit in the Artist field: as they contributed to the art, so they should get credit.

Good idea.

The other name in this format we have used for Melbourne is “Anonymous - Melbourne”, as we had a couple where we know who the artist is but they had expressed a desire to remain anonymous.

That’s handy to know, about the anonymous artist name.

I am out hunting, and went to add a sunflower mural that Katie O painted a while back. I was delighted to see an absolutely beautiful mosaic mural!

I hope no one minds, but i decided to use the naming format I proposed earlier today. This is in Lillington, which hasn’t got much of an art scene, so it (at least for the time being) should stay under the umbrella of Leamington Spa. However, as this was the creation of purely Lillington residents, I put the artist as Community - Lillington… hope no one minds!

Anyway, Southorn Court Mosaic Mural is now live!

…and I can change the group artist’s name at a later date, if needs be.
