A question about Bristol

Hi all!

Next Saturday, I’m going to be in Bristol for the day. I’m seeing a show Friday night, and so will be stopping over.

Last year, I spent an amazing day around Bedminster, followed by St Pauls and IKEA, with a brief break in between to spot three of the Banksys. (BTW, i wish I had known about SAC then!)

Anyway, my plan is to concentrate on the City centre, as I’ll already be parked up there. I’ll have my SAC app as a guide, but there is just so much to see! So, a question to all you lovely artists and hunters who know the area… are there any must sees that you would recommend? Big or small, I don’t mind!

Thank you!

I was there just last weekend! We definitely need a new hunter in Bristol, there’s so many amazing spots not on our map yet!

I didn’t spend too much time hunting(it was very rainy sadly), but the side street of Stokes Croft are definitely worth a look, there’s a seemingly infinite number of interesting murals there.

And then there’s the Upfest Gallery further down south.

Also, unrelated to street art, but if you get a chance, the views from the hill next to the Clifton Suspension Bridge are well worth a look!

I’m not planning on hunting there; I don’t know enough about the Bristol art scene to feel i can contribute much.

Besides, if i spend all my time hunting for SAC, I won’t have time to see the art . It took me a whole day to get just about 25 entries added for Tamworth last weekend (going back tomorrow to get a load more), and i know where most of them are.

Having said that, if i do see some really good ones in Bristol, I might ask for temp hunter status to get those put on after I get back.

BTW, that mural looks GORGEOUS! And I like the sneaky little logo on the bridge…

My faves from Bedminster last year were these:

I did manage to see that mural, and loads more! I can see why there is a need for more hunters in Bristol, as there are a lot of murals that have been badly tagged, and others that have been replaced with newer ones… which happened several years ago!

There are also murals that should be on there, but aren’t, like this one by Sophie Long (next door to one of the Banksys)

There’s actually no active hunters in Bristol, and only one hunter in total whose last activity was Dec 2024. There’s also a lot of unactioned Community Notes, not only yours but others, some that have been there for over a year.

So, anything you could do (eg action your own Community Notes and add some of the major murals you found that aren’t there would be a huge service to the Bristol map in my opinion.

I’m happy to do a spot of temp hunter duty. I’m back home now, but I’m pretty sure I can remember where a lot of the artwork is.

What normally happens with art marked as vandalised?

I can only speak to what happens in my “sphere of influence”. We, the Melbourne hunters will generally just mark the piece as removed if the “reporting user” is someone we know, or someone we trust. Sometimes we (the Melbourne hunter team) will discuss and decide if we want to personally check the location before removing.

As Country Manager it is part of my responsibility (as I understand it) to follow up on unactioned Community Notes in other cities. If I have an active hunter in the city I will follow up with them and get them to action, in the case of cities where there are no active hunters I will usually err on the side of marking the artwork as removed, as if it turns out it isn’t it is easy to return it to active status at a later date.

Hope that helps.

Yup! Some of the vandalised ones that I saw are definite no-brainers for removal. One of them though, I think I’ll leave as is, but maybe add my photo of it.

It’s one of the Banksys. Some a-hole has fired paint gun pellets at it.

It is still attracting visitors, and of all the murals in Bristol that have the potential to be restored, a Banksy is, I would suggest, one of them.

Yeah good idea to add your photo (and perhaps a description of what’s occurred) to the Banksy.

I’ve given you temp access to Bristol, it says it’ll expire March 10th.

Thank you, much appreciated!

I have a few more to add, which i shall do over the next few days. It’s a shame that I didn’t think to make sure to do all photos to SAC standard, rather than just a quick snap-and-move-on that I tend to do when I’ve got a lot of places to see, and the pics are just for me. Still deciding whether or not to upload this one, as my photo does not do it justice:

It’s a beautiful mural, but the photo was so rushed! My excuse is that was persisting down at the time, and i wanted to move towards shelter, not to a decent spot to take a better pic…

Still, I am really glad that I am doing a spot of temp hunting, as researching the murals for the site has taught me loads, like how one of the murals already on SAC was painted over a vandalised Banksy. You can bet that all got added

As a keen street art photographer and also as a pixel-peeping-perfectionist photographer I can understand your concern, but I think this photo is absolutely fine, and I’m always erring on the side of getting the artwork added rather than neccesarily waiting for the perfect photo. We can always add better photos later.

I’ll add it at some point… when I stop getting these 401 errors

But whilst I’m waiting…

In researching that piece, I discovered the artist has two names on SAC: “The Hass” and “Hasan Kamil”. He has more entries under The Hass, and only one as Hasan Kamil. Given that he signs his name as The Hass, I would suggest that becomes the preferred artist name, at least until we’re told otherwise?

Good catch!
I have merged the Hasan Kamil entry into The Hass, deleted the empty artist stub and added Hasan Kamil as an alternative name for The Hass.
